Who this route suits and when to go

This is a desk-researched editorial itinerary, not a first-hand trip report. It suits travellers who enjoy walking, architecture and time in neighbourhoods. Spring and autumn; avoid midday heat in summer. Each day concentrates on one or two areas, with spare time on arrival and departure. Families, older travellers and anyone needing step-free access should shorten walks and confirm lifts, steps and entrances individually. The stated duration includes travel days, not that many full sightseeing days.

Daily itinerary

Day 1

East West Lake, Bai Causeway and Gushan: arrive, leave luggage and choose a short lakeside walk rather than a complete circuit.

Day 2

West Lake and Longjing: spend the morning by the water and the afternoon in the tea village. Ask separately about tea service and retail purchases.

Day 3

Hangzhou to Shaoxing and Lu Xun's Native Place: take a morning train, drop luggage and devote the afternoon to the historic district.

Day 4

Cangqiao Straight Street and Bazi Bridge: explore waterways in the morning, leaving the afternoon for departure. A canal boat is optional after checking local conditions.

Getting around

Use rail between cities. Distinguish Shaoxing Station from Shaoxing North, allowing additional transfer time from the latter. Combine metro, buses and walking within each city. Save the accommodation entrance, arrival station and first attraction on your map before setting off. Check for similarly named stops and multiple exits. Recheck weather and operator notices each morning rather than treating old online timetables as guaranteed services. Avoid tightly timed, non-refundable activities after a regional connection. Ask your hotel about luggage storage before planning the first and final day.

Stay near Hubin or Wulin in Hangzhou, then within walking distance of Lu Xun's Native Place in Shaoxing. Compare the full price including taxes, cancellation conditions, late-arrival arrangements and the actual room category. Keeping a single base where practical saves packing and transfer time. Alternatives when conditions change

In Hangzhou, keep a short lakeside walk and drop a lengthy tea-village outing. In Shaoxing, choose one confirmed-open interior and either Cangqiao Street or Bazi Bridge. Keep the rail-transfer day fixed to avoid unintended extra hotel nights.

In rain, reduce outdoor walking and choose a nearby exhibition confirmed open, a cafe or a proper rest. Do not cross the region merely to complete a checklist. Cancel the relevant outdoor activities in thunderstorms, severe weather or official trail and road closures. Swapping two days can solve lighter weather issues, but recheck reservations, refund conditions and transport connections before doing so.
